THIS WEEK:

  • Live Nation has bought a majority stake in the live-streaming platform, Veeps. By merging Veeps into Live Nation they will be able to broaden their services by expanding the capacity of concerts, creating more accessibility and exclusivity. This expansion is aimed to take place upon the return of live in-person performances but in the interim live-streamed performances will still take place.

  • Instagram is currently testing the re-introduction of visible like counts on posts. According to app researcher, Alessandro Paluzzi users would be able to decide if they want their like counts publicly displayed. Instagram is also looking into adding a setting in which users can choose to see other creators like counts. This test comes 3 years after Instagram removed public like counts as part of an initiative to support users wellbeing by removing vanity metrics. Currently, Instagram has not publicly released any specific data regarding this experiment, however, it would be of interest to see the results.

  • TikTok is adding a new Q&A feature to spark more creator to fan engagement. This new feature is currently in its testing stages and is currently only available to creators with public creator accounts with over 10,000 followers. While this feature is in testing any user can access it and ask questions to the creators who have opted-in to use it. Creators are able to use questions as video prompts, the same way they can use video comments. If it is decided that this feature will remain permanently, this could be a great way for fans and creators to maintain deeper connections in the app.

  • The Queensland Government’s new Covid-19 roadmap allows seated ticketed venues to hold 100% of their capacity. As of January 22nd, Queensland residents are now allowed to see live entertainment events with large capacity changes.  The new restrictions allow 100% capacity with allocated seating with patrons encouraged to wear masks upon entry and exit. This is a large step forward for Queensland’s road map and it is exciting to see after months of restrictions for live music and entertainment.

  • Youtube has been working on a new feature that uses hashtags in the search engine. The new “hashtag landing page” will display videos related to the hashtag. Originally, hashtag searches would simply return with videos that directly use that hashtag in the title or the description. Now if you click on a hashtag or search it, it will take you to similar videos. The algorithm being used is reported to need some further work, as the landing pages currently display a mixture of very old and new videos instead of the newest or most relevant videos. This new channel of search will offer users another, possibly better way to find content suited to them.

  • Snapchat has announced an update to its short-form video format, Spotlight. The update will now have view counts publicly displayed on Spotlight clips, a feature similar to the popular short-form video app, TikTok. This metric is displayed on Spotlight clips as a video overlay on a clip, in comparison, the metric is on a thumbnail of the TikTok creators page. The rise of short-form video content and applications have been exponential since 2018 and is projected to continue to rise into 2021.
