  • Facebook users in the United Kingdom have a new feature on the app, Facebook News.
This dedicated news tab was originally beta-tested in the United States back in 2019. Through this new feature, users can now scroll through this tab to receive the latest news headlines. Alongside this, users are able to customise their news feed and choose news topics they would like to hear about.  The question is, what news sources will be available? Is this news reliable and factual? Facebook already has an issue with fake news circulating. Only time will tell!

  • Spotify shows their plans for enhancing the user experience.
This patent dates back to October 2020 and it’s now received an update that outlines its methods. They plan on using speech recognition to determine users’ moods, age, gender and accent. These findings will then be used to recommend new content to users. Currently, Spotify users can manually enter their personal information for customisation, but Spotify argues this method is not efficient enough. If this becomes a reality, Spotify could use the Metadata collected to create a fully personalised listening experience. However, there is the question of users’ privacy and how the data will be stored.

  • Instagram has launched a new ‘Professional Dashboard’ for creators.
According to Instagram, this is a central destination to track performance, access and discover professional tools, and explore educational information curated by Instagram. The three key elements this dashboard focuses on include performance tracking, business growth and educational resources. Similar features have been available on the platform in the past, however, they have been less accessible. This should make it easier for users with creator and business accounts to further understand the trends surrounding their accounts and their account performance.

  • Clubhouse app helps creators monetise.
Clubhouse is an audio-only social media platform that launched in March 2020. Since its debut, the app has grown largely now hosting around 2 million users worldwide. Creators on the app can host a variety of audio-based content including musical performances, podcast-style shows and simple chat shows. There is also an interactive feature allowing listeners to chime in and add something to the conversation. Upon its mass growth, Clubhouse has received over 180 investors and funding. Part of this money is planned to go towards helping popular creators receive monetisation and become influencers on the platform.
