  • Twitter’s paid subscription service.
Twitter announced at their annual Analyst Day Presentation that they have set in motion the plans to introduce a paid subscription service to the platform. The ‘Super Follow’ will allow users to earn revenue from their following by offering exclusive content which will only be unlocked via paid subscription. The company stated exclusive content could include "bonus tweets, access to a community group, subscription to a newsletter, or a badge indicating your support."  It’s unclear at this point what the pricing structures and eligibility requirements to host a subscription will be, however, we are likely to know in the coming months. Would you subscribe to Twitter for these exclusive offers?

  • Spotify introduces HiFi streaming.
Spotify Premium subscribers will be able to upgrade their sound quality later this year. During Spotify's Stream On event, they announced ‘Spotify HiFi’, a streaming service addition that offers higher quality music. According to the platform, this has been a high-demand request for Spotify users. The new service is set to deliver ‘CD-quality, lossless audio.’ This development will line Spotify up with competitors Deezer and Tidal who already offer high-quality Flac files to their users. Keep your ears open and see if you can hear the difference!

  • DistroKid and Twitch partner to help musicians monetise.

Independent music distributor Distrokid has teamed up with Twitch to help live streaming artists earn revenue via the Twitch Affiliate Program. The Affiliate Program will now be available to DistroKid members who utilise the platform to perform for fans and subscribers. Alongside earning money from subscriptions they will also be able to earn money from Twitch ‘Bits’ which are donations from viewers. Twitch and DistroKid have had multiple partnerships throughout the years, most notably, DistroKid is currently one of the few distributors to have a licensing agreement with Twitch and has their library available to streamers in the Soundtrack by Twitch section of the platform.

  • Share lyrics with Apple Music.

Apple Music is set to introduce a lyric sharing feature in Australia this Autumn. It is currently in a Beta testing stage on the new version of IOS and is available to testers, developers and early users. The update will allow users to select lyrics on the now playing screen and share them directly on their social media platforms and via messages. When shared to Instagram the lyrics will be accompanied by a link to the song so viewers can listen to the song on the Apple Music platform.  When shared via messages, a snippet of the song that contains the lyrics sent will be played for the recipient. Will this be any different from Spotify’s current link with Instagram and encourage more Apple Music subscribers?

Since its beginning it has issued 100,000 celebrity messages globally and saw a rise of 50% every month between July 2020 and January 2021. The platform hosts a range of celebrities, including musicians from around the globe.
