  • Twitter is testing a new way to display images.

Timeline tweets will see images shown in full, as opposed to the normal cropped view. Single image tweets will have the full display but multiple images will not be supported in the format. Alongside this Twitter is testing the use of 4K and high-quality images. This update is great to see as visual artists and photographers will now be able to show their work in high quality. What creators are you excited to see utilise this new high-quality format?

  • Instagram ‘lite’ has returned.

Instagram ‘lite’ was originally released in 2018 but it was pulled from the play store last year. The app is due to return to 170 countries from today and aims to bring Instagram back to those with older, smaller spaced phones and those who don’t have the best internet connection. This app only requires 2 megabytes (MB) of data in comparison to the regular apps 30MB, so smaller phones can support the app. The app allows users to use Instagram and scroll through their feed as the original Instagram ‘lite’ had done, but with the new update, users can send direct messages, record videos and post them.

  • TikTok gives creators control of their comments.

This new update from TikTok will allow creators to control which comments remain up on their videos. They can choose to “Filter All Comments”  which prevents comments from being posted before the creator approves them. There is also a new feature for users who comment on posts, a pop-up box will appear on the screen when posting a comment asking the user to reconsider posting a comment which may be inappropriate or unkind. These are the next steps in TikToks initiative to create a kinder and more inclusive app and to combat cyberbullying.

  • Pinterest has expanded its efforts to fight the spread of misinformation.

They have partnered with various health bodies to ensure any information relating to Covid-19 is factual and in alliance with reputable sources. They will only be accepting content surrounding Covid that has been posted by these reputable courses and authoritative bodies. Although this platform isn’t majorly used as a new source, Pinners still see these posts on their feeds. Pinterest is offering paid media and support for medial organisations serving underrepresented communities to “amplify and elevate reliable third-party covid related resources.”

  • Facebook adds new monetisation options.

Facebook will now allow creators to insert ads on 1-minute videos and live streams, users that are eligible must have at least 10,000 followers and 600thousand views within a 60 day period. This opens up ad monetisation and opportunities to more users and creators. Facebooks generator created around $8USD per 1,000 views for a creator, which is astronomically larger than TikToks $0.05. People will be able to apply via the Facebook creator studio page.
