THIS WEEK:

  • Spotify is testing Virtual Events: Spotify is exploring alternative options to fill the void of real-world concerts, having teased the testing of a new ‘Upcoming Virtual Events’ section on their platform, with the aim of connecting artists with their fans through ticketed live music events.  By adapting to a pandemic world, Spotify will replace traditional event listings with virtual events, helping promote artists’ livestream plans by making them easily accessible to fans.

  • Instagram rolls out its new ‘Suggested Posts’ feature. After users have scrolled through the latest posts on their feed, a notification reading ‘You’re All Caught Up’ will appear on the screen. Following this, users will see ‘Suggested Posts’ if they continue to scroll through Instagram. To see older posts instead, users must click the ‘View Older Posts’ button under the ‘You’re All Caught Up’ notification. This change comes as the platform works towards more focus on eCommerce, allowing users to browse products and shop on the platform. The question of whether this is encouraging extra time spent on the app and potential long term mental health repercussions is yet to be addressed.

  • A study has been conducted in Germany testing three live music event setups and their effects on COVID infection rates. 1500 people volunteered for the study where three different concert types were experienced; one was pre-coronavirus style with no social distancing, one with more entry and exit points and some distance between attendees, and one formally socially distanced (1.5m apart) concert. The researchers say they are satisfied with the data acquisition phase but are still awaiting results.
